Last instar larva of Trypoxylon (Trypoxylon) maidli Richards (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae), with biological notes on one nest Zoologia
Buys,Sandor Christiano.
The last larval instar and the cocoon of Trypoxylon (Trypoxylon) maidli Richards, 1934 are described. This larva is apparently indistinguishable from that of T. clavicerum exiguum Tsuneki, 1956. They can be distinguished from larvae of other species in the subgenus by the following features: integument of body smooth, sensilla on both sensorial area and labrum, and distinct parietal bands. Notes on nesting site and preys from one nest are presented. Eurycoma insigne (Millidge, 1991) (Linyphiidae) and Argiope argentata (Fabricius, 1775) (Araneidae) are reported as preys.

Joly, Jean-pierre; Bouget, Jean-francois; Hirata, Toshio.

Guichet, Roger.
European hake is one of the most important commercial species of the North East Atlantic. Its biology is quite well known in spite of age reading problems. This report provides a review of the state of knowledge based on updated data, specially for parameters used in the working groups in charge of stocks assessments. The fisheries for hake are essentially sequential. In recent years fishing mortalities have been moderate and the over exploitation of the stocks is due to the excessive catches of young fish and to the fishing pattern of some fleets. The result of this inappropriate exploitation pattern is dangerous with a decrease of the spawning stock biomass and recrutrnent for the two stocks.

ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Destombe, A.; Coppin, Franck; Koubbi, P.; Vaz, Sandrine; Le Roy, Didier; Carpentier, Audrey.
General introduction: The red mullet is among the fish that are the most popular and that have been known of for the longest amount of time. The Greeks and the Romans have left us in their literature famous pages in which they praise the quality and beautiful colours of their gurnards and their mulles. Also, the skin of this fish has been very popular since earliest antiquity: It is said that for the Romans, a beautiful fish was worth more than the man who had caught it! Moreover, at feasts, a red mullet was displayed in a vase to amuse the guests with the changes of colour (Bloch, 1793). The red rock mullet (Mullus surmuletus) is a benthic fish, which means it lives near the sea bottom. It is geographically present in the Atlantic Ocean from the coasts...

Latrouite, Daniel.
Due to the unsuitability of the north brittany coastal fishing grounds for trawling, the fishing activity of the harbours of this coast has been oriented towards the catch of invertebrates and peculiarly the large crustaceans. After, in the beginning of the XIX century, looking for lobster and spiny lobster, fishing has been, since the seventies, centered on the catch of the edible crab (Cancer Pagurus) and of the spider crab (Maia squinado). The first part of this document introduces the context of the exploitation and the concerned fleets. The second part treats of the biological parameters of the edible crab: growth, reproduction, migration and pathologies. The third part, devoted to the exploitation and the monitoring of the edible crab stock, is an...

Griessinger, Jean-michel; Lacroix, Denis; Gondouin, Philippe.
This book represents a two year study by a team of French biologists to collect, summarise and present the experience and knowledge gained in the rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, not only in the French overseas territories but also in the main countries which are developing this culture. This document comprises four parts : - The first describes the world market. The prawn rearing is already an economic reality in the tropical world, the United States and in Europe. - The second on shows that, although the culture techniques are quite complex, production systems can be adapted to local conditions and markets. - The third part is a practical guide, both for investors and farmers, giving all necessary data to start-up and monitor a project in the...

Quero, Jean-claude.
This study concerns mainly 2 species Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus; M. polli is a more northern species though the 3 species are known to inhabit the same regions. The life cycle, seasonal migrations geographical distribution and fishing grounds of the 2 main species are discussed in detail. The intensity of fishing in this region, over the past 10 years has increased to such an extent that during 1968 -1970 this production accounted for one half level on a world-wide basis. Attempts have been made by Britain to market this fish as a frozen product.

Guerault, Daniel; Desaunay, Yves; Beillois, Pierre; Prouzet, Patrick; Martinet, Jean-pierre; Cuende, François - Xavier.
The exploitation of amphihaline species by marine and freshwater commercial fishermen in the Loire estuary in 1989, and by marine commercial fishermen in the Adour estuary from 1985-1991 is described in this study. This fishery employs 320 fishermen and represents a commercial value of 38 million FF. This is mainly due to the exploitation of glass eel, especially in the Loire River, the landings of which have decreased alarmingly. In the Adour River, the diversity of the exploited species and the total commercial value of drift gillnet catches - on the average 43% - in this fishery are high. The landings of migratory salmonid species are high and they may attain 25% of the total commercial value. This study emphasizes the uniqueness, the socio-economic...

Life cycle of Retracrus johnstoni Keifer (Acari: Phytoptidae) Neotropical Entomology
Gondim Jr.,Manoel G.C.; Moraes,Gilberto J. de.
Eriophyoid mites are commonly associated to palm trees, although few of them have been reported causing economic damage to those plants. One exception is Retracrus johnstoni Keifer, a pest of Bactris gasipaes Kunth, plant used for palm heart production. R. jonhstoni is frequently found in large numbers on Arecaceae in southeast Brazil. The biology of this mite was studied under laboratory condition. Sections of leaves of the palm tree Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman, with ca. 15 leaflets, were kept alive by maintaining their bases in distilled water. Ca. 20 field collected adults of R. johnstoni were transferred onto each leaflet for oviposition. After 24h, mites were removed, leaving only one egg laid. Once a day, the eggs and the subsequent stages...

Life history of Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on coffee plants Neotropical Entomology
Reis,Paulo R.; Teodoro,Adenir V.; Pedro Neto,Marçal; Silva,Ester A. da.
The predaceous mite Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) is the second most abundant phytoseiid on coffee plants (Coffea arabica L), after Euseius alatus DeLeon, in Lavras, MG, Brazil, associated to the vector of the coffee ring spot virus, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). Its life history was studied taking into account biological aspects, life table, predatory activity and functional and numerical responses in relation to the density of the prey. The adult female has longevity of 38 days when supplied with B. phoenicis. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r m) was 0.150 and the mean generation time (T) 25.3 days. The population doubles every 4.6 days. Thirty mites B. phoenicis /3-cm diameter coffee leaf arenas were separately...

Life history of Talorchestia deshayesii (Amphipoda, Talitridae) in the Ionian sandy beach (southern Italy) BABT
Prato,Ermelinda; Trono,Annunziata; Biandolino,Francesca.
The population structure and reproductive biology of Talorchestia deshayesii (Audouin, 1826) on an exposed sandy beach in Taranto (Italy) was examined during one year cycle. Monthly surveys were performed from September 2002 to August 2003. Individuals were subdivided into sex, measured and abundance were calculated for each sampling. Abundance varied during the study period, with a marked decrease in winter. T. deshayesii, was found in a relative narrow zone near the sea in winter and summer while in spring and autumn the animals were widespread along the supralittoral. Reproduction occurred from February to November. The minimum average CL at the moment of recovery ranged from 0.22 to 0.28 mm. The sex ratio was female biased. The females and males became...

Megamelus bellicus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae): immature stages and biology Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Mariani,Roxana; Sosa,Alejandro; Marino de Remes Lenicov,Ana María.
The immature stages of Megamelus bellicus Remes Lenicov & Sosa (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are described, keyed and illustrated. The description of each stage was based on 24-h hatched nymphs from the laboratory colony. The main characters that distinguish the various stages are: body size, color, number of tarsomeres, espinulation of the metatibia and number of teeth on the spur; presence of sensoria on antennal pedicel. This insect was reared on pieces of water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms Laubach. Biological data based on lab and field observations show that M. bellicus carries out its biological cycle successfully on Pontederiaceae. One to nine eggs per scar are laid deeply into the aerenquima of the petiole, being most frequent...

Merging SeaWiFS and MODIS/Aqua Ocean Color Data in North and Equatorial Atlantic Using Weighted Averaging and Objective Analysis ArchiMer
Pottier, C; Garcon, V; Larnicol, G; Sudre, J; Schaeffer, P; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
Two approaches of ocean color data merging were tested and compared in the North and Equatorial Atlantic Basin: the weighted averaging and the objective analysis. The datasets used were the daily level-3 binned data of chlorophyll-a from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Aqua satellite over the year 2003, which is the first common full year of operation. Since they represent input for both approaches, matchups between the satellite and the in situ data from the SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System and the Atlantic Meridional Transect were first studied to compute a spatial map of the root mean-square error and of the bias. Because of the log distribution of the chlorophyll...
